Soil Importation Project (the Project)

The East Renfrewshire Golf Club and Booth Golf and Leisure

The East Renfrewshire Golf Club (ERGC) and Booth Golf and Leisure (BGL) have signed an agreement concerning the importation of c. 200,000 cubic metres of clean soil.

The Project will result in a significant improvement to practice facilities at ERGC. Additionally, landscaping and land profiling will improve the aesthetic look of the last two holes at ERGC.

ERGC is a members’ golf club which celebrated its centenary in 2022. It is a major employer with c. 22 members of staff. It is well placed to provide golfing facilities for nearby residents of Newton Mearns and particularly the new Maidenhill developments.

BGL are experienced operators in this sector having completed similar projects, or have similar such projects under way, across the North and Midlands of England. The project at ERGC will be their first Scottish venture.

ERGC wish to improve their practice facilities. At present the main practice area has no drainage and as a result the area is very poor and rarely utilised. The proposal involves the importation of clean “inert” soil – material imported will be similar or better quality to existing soils. Strict standards will be in place to ensure compliance with legislation on the movement of soil. The aim is to have a fully drained practice area comprising a short-game area, a 6-hole short course and a hitting area.

At this stage no buildings are proposed on the site. Once the Project is further advanced various building options will be considered. ERGC did receive planning permission from East Renfrewshire Council (ERC) for a 6 bay driving range building in 2018 which did not proceed at that time.

The rough areas bordering the 17th and 18th look very untidy particularly after the recent tree felling. The plan is to import soil to re-profile and landscape these areas, as well as improvement to water flow management and storage.

From the granting of planning permission by ERC it is anticipated that the Project will take two years to complete.

Public consultations will take place in the Clubhouse at ERGC on Tuesday 25th February 2025 between 2pm and 5pm, and on Thursday 27th March 2025 between 4pm and 7pm. Project team members from ERGC and BGL will be available
