Founded in 1922 The East Renfrewshire Golf Club, or East Ren as it is known, is one of the finest moorland courses in Scotland. The course was designed by James Braid and has all the features one associates with a Braid designed course with elevated tees, undulating fairways and plateau greens. Although initially without trees the course now features a variety of trees and these line many of the fairways.
At just over 6000 yards (6107 yards) it may not appear long in to-days world of 7000 yard monsters it is undoubtedly a golfers course with thought and care required on every shot and being set high the strength of the wind can change the club selection or choice of shot dramatically.
Every hole on the course is different and it is difficult to pick out one hole as being better than another. We have picked out three holes as being representative of the course but ask another member and he or she will choose another three.
The 2nd ‘Brither Burn’ is 346 yards par 4 features an elevated tee with the burn meandering from the line of the green to the tee requiring the golfer to position the drive to the left of the burn and then play over it to the green with anything ranging from a full wood to nine iron depending on the wind direction.
The 14th ‘Sair Trauchle’ 496 yards par 5 requires a drive over a crest. The green can be seen from the fairway and is a tempting proposition for the second shot, but this requires the golfer to fly a burn some 50 yards short of the green and not in view from the second shot.
The 18th ‘Hame’s Best’ 454 yards features an elevated tee to a sweeping tree lined fairway with a burn to the left and across the fairway. 3 bunkers and a burn protect the green. A par 4 at this hole - in full view of the clubhouse - is a satisfying end to the day.
Oh and the 13th is a record holder with two consecutive holes in one achieved in 2002.
